Floorplan Diagrams (Candy Liu)
The dining area in these two floorplans is looking toward the community garden and Phil's house. The dining room is very intimate here. The two floorplans both have a secondary living room. The master bedroom on the left floorplan has its own access next to the dining area. And the guest bedroom has to go further down the hallway to enter the room. The floorplan on the right, the master bedroom and guest bedroom share the same path.

The den in these two floorplans is entirely separated from the house.

This fist drawing focuses on the entertaining aspect of the dwelling. A place to be comfortable and relaxed while still having the natural environment seep into the atmosphere. Playing with the natural light to allow for theater style lighting along the walls as well as a ambient glow across the ceiling.
The following model shows the play with the natural light in the room, along the walls and ceiling.

This next drawing depicts the essence of socializing in a shared aspect. I have proposed a shared courtyard the with be embraced by two seperate 2 story dwellings. It is a place to laugh and share stories, BBQ or have some tea. With the living room and kitchen located on the main floor of my proposed residence, it allows for the movement of socialization from the very public courtyard to the semi-public dwelling. Along the same lines, a second floor balcony will be located inside the courtyard to allow for interation between private (bedroom/personal space) and public (courtyard). Again, playing with natural light to provide areas of shade and area's exposed to the sunlight. The following model shows the shade and shadow of the courtyard during different time of the day.

This last drawing is a representation of how waking can be decided by the play with natural light once again. During the early part of the morning, ambient light shines on the ground but not force you to get up. However, during the later part of the morning, the natural sunlight coaxes you to get up once it peeks through the upper window. Also, on the west side of the dwelling a light well lures the harsh sunlight down and transforms it into an ambient light that is visible anytime of day.

This first image is a small, personal dining area that captures morning light, as well as light throughout the day and into the sunset. The space was originally intended to be a breakfast room where the day could begin in an atmosphere full of light and views - what a wonderful way to start the day. The room would project out from the facade to allow for 270 degree views, as well as directly face south. The louvers along the top are arranged to keep the highly angled light from the summer sun from heating up the room, but allowing the low angled winter sun to penetrate the space and add solar warmth. The floor could be concrete to trap the solar radiation of the sun and store until the evening when it would help to warm the space.

I have moved the master to the North garden side to create a more private setting. the Living and gathering have been combined to create a more user friendly space. This scheme still allows for the transparency of the structure as well as for the indoor/outdoor relationships to co-exist.
Model of the scheme that will begin to change...
Here is my first attempt at connecting to the retail, community, and the outdoor spaces. I still think there is too much going on and it will begin to become more cohesive as changes take place....or that is my plan anyway.
